Enclosure in Ballybannon — Report the wrong picture

Ballybannon holds a ghost circle fifty-five metres wide, visible only when crops grow uneven above buried ditches. The interior splits into smaller boxes, perhaps ancient fields or rooms, suggesting a ringfort rather than a random boundary. That much structure implies people lived, worked and marked ownership there before the land forgot their names.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Visible on aerial photograph (CUCAP ASW 22) as subcircular area enclosed by cropmark of fosse (est max. diam. c. 55m). Interior is divided by cropmarks of fosses, possibly field boundaries. Possibly a ringfort.
