Enclosure castle known as Triermain Castle

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Half a hectare of scarred earth holds the flat footprint of a tower that resisted every siege and storm for centuries. You can still picture the family huddled inside when border raiders came, listening for hooves on the valley road while the thick stone drank the noise. The castle vanished, but the enclosure remains sharp enough to mark the exact line where human fear once drew its border.
The National Heritage List for England records Enclosure castle known as Triermain Castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Triermain Castle, an enclosure castle in Cumbria, was built in the late 12th or early 13th century, likely by a local lord or as part of the defensive network established during the Anglo-Scottish conflicts. It is remembered for its strategic position and as an example of medieval military architecture in the Border region.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
