Enclosure castle at Castle Donington

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Mud, not marble, built the first Castle Donington. Normans threw earth into a steep mound and ringed it with ditches, making a temporary seat of power that still bumps the landscape near the village. No stone chamber remains for a camera or pride, yet the ground still remembers the shape of the people who stood guard there.
The National Heritage List for England records Enclosure castle at Castle Donington as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built by the de Warenne family in the 12th century, Castle Donington was an important medieval stronghold and administrative centre in Leicestershire. It is remembered for its strategic role in the region and its well-preserved earthworks, which provide insight into early castle design.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
