Emmet Stagg was born in Hollymount, County Mayo, on 1 October 1944, the start of a life that would stretch across Irish politics. He was one of thirteen siblings, raised in poverty under the shadow of the Catholic Church, with his brother Frank Stagg among them. That cramped, serious childhood may have forged the edge he later brought to party fights and public service.
