Embanked enclosure — Raheevarren

Fairy fort / ringfort

Why this matters

A local fairy fort (ringfort/rath); wider significance not recorded.

What is recorded here

Marked as small embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 30-35m) on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6 inch map, and situated on a gentle SE-facing slope that is at the bottom of the steep SE-facing slope of Carrickbyrne Hill. It is not visible at ground level in a cereal crop but much of the monument would be under the ENE-WSW N25 Wexford to New Ross road. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 16 October, 2012
