Embanked enclosure — Croghan Upper

Situated on a steep S and SW-facing slope of Croghan Mountain. It is marked on the 1839 OS 6-inch map as a large embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 85m) and as a large oval enclosure (dims. c. 100m E-W; c. 80m N-S) on the 1924 ed. It appears from aerial photographs (GSIAP, T 40/41) to have been a large bivallate ringfort, perhaps with an annexe attached at E. The only indication at ground level in pasture is the curve of field fence at S (C c. 90m) and slight trace of fosse at W (Wth 5m). It is visible as a circular cropmark (diam. c. 80m) on a series of vertical aerial photographs (OSI 2000), with an annexe to the E, both surrounded by an outer fosse which provided its oval shape on the 1924 ed. of the 6-inch map.
