Why this matters
Elmley Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Elmley family and later held by the powerful Berkeley family. It is remembered for its strategic importance in the Welsh Marches and as the site of the execution of King Charles I's son, Charles, Prince of Wales, in 1649 during the English Civil War.
