This blue commemorative plaque records: Hollingford House, formerly Church House – home of Elizabeth Gaskell’s Uncle, Dr. Peter Holland and his daughters, Lucy and Mary, thought to be the models for Miss Matty and Miss Jenkyns characters in Mrs Gaskell’s ‘Cranford’.
Elizabeth Gaskell was a prominent Victorian novelist known for her detailed depiction of English provincial life; Peter Holland, along with his daughters Lucy and Mary, resided at Hollingford House and are believed to have inspired the characters Miss Matty and Miss Jenkyns in Gaskell’s novel ‘Cranford’.
