Eldred Pottinger was born in County Down, Ireland on 12 August 1811, the eldest son of Thomas Pottinger of Mount Pottinger. He grew into a Bombay Army officer and diplomat who became known as the Hero of Herat after helping defend the city against a Persian siege in 1837. His later life moved through Afghan courts, hostage captivity and British withdrawal, ending in Hong Kong on 15 November 1843 while visiting his uncle Henry Pottinger.
