Elcho Castle is a medieval tower house built around 1560 for Clan Wemyss, standing close to the south bank of the River Tay. It mixes mansion-like guest rooms with seventeen gun loops, suggesting its owners wanted comfort and defence in the same breath. The castle was re-roofed around 1830, became a scheduled monument in 1920, and passed into public care in the early 20th century.
