Eglinton Castle rose as a giant Gothic mansion in Kilwinning, built between 1797 and 1802 by the 12th Earl of Eglinton to rival Culzean in grandeur. Its sandstone walls enclosed a chair carved from Alloway kirk timber, inlaid with the whole of Burns' poem Tam o' Shanter, while a mysterious tunnel may still hide beneath the lawn rockery. The Earl claimed thirty-four thousand Scots acres across Ayrshire and the islands, yet evaded the hearth tax and left behind ruins where that proud ambition still shadows the ground.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Eglinton Castle as Barrow (prehistoric), Cinerary Urn (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
