Edward Jenner blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Edward Jenner FRS (1749-1823) Born in Berkeley, the pioneer of smallpox vaccine and father of immunology attended Cirencester Grammar School here c.1757-64, during which time he developed his interests in natural history and fossil hunting. Jenner is often credited with saving more lives than any other person in history. The first record of Cirencester's grammar school is from 1242, when a 'magister scholarum Cyrencestrie' is recored in a lawsuit. In 1457 the school received a principal grant from John Chedworth, Bishop of Lincoln. This building, a medieval hall and solar, was the school from c.1534 until 1880.
