This black commemorative plaque records: Robert Story. The Gargrave schoolmaster-poet lived in this house which was built for him by Matthew Wilson Esq., of Eshton Hall, in the year 1828.
Robert Story was a schoolmaster and poet who lived in Gargrave, remembered for his local poetry. Edward Augustus Bowles and Matthew Wilson were contemporaries; Wilson, a landowner, commissioned the house where Story lived, highlighting the interconnected lives of local figures in 19th-century England.
