Castle Terrace rose in the nineteenth century as a terraced line of houses, and number twelve still stands within that Edinburgh address. The official map places the point to the nearest metre, yet proximity does not grant entry. The front door may be closed to strangers while the rooms behind it hold the ordinary lives of whoever answers the knock.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Edinburgh, 12 Castle Terrace as Terraced House (19th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
