Castle Street has always belonged to the crown, yet this small address still holds an ordinary life inside its walls. It began as a house and flat in the eighteenth century, then became a shop in the twentieth, adapting as Edinburgh changed around it. The building has survived because it kept serving people rather than pretending to be a monument.
