Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Edinburgh, Holyrood Park, St Vining's Well as Holy Well (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

St Vining's Well is associated with St Vining, a 7th-century Irish monk and companion of St Cuthbert, believed to have founded a hermitage in the area. The well was historically visited for its supposed healing properties, particularly for eye ailments, and was a site of pilgrimage and local Christian devotion.
