Colinton Road carries children past the Castle Gates, a twentieth-century house structure still standing in Edinburgh. The gates mark the edge of Merchiston Castle School, where ordinary weeks repeat behind stone and iron. They exclude strangers but invite young people into rooms shaped for learning. The road drops past them toward the city, carrying the sound of feet and laughter instead of silence.

Merchiston Castle, now part of the Merchiston Castle School, was originally built in the early 17th century by the Drummond family, Scottish nobles and prominent landowners. It is historically significant as the birthplace of John Napier, the mathematician who invented logarithms, and as a long-standing educational institution in Edinburgh.
