Colinton Road sanatorium stands as a twentieth-century hospital built to treat tuberculosis when medicine still relied on rest, air and patience. Merchiston Castle School may have occupied the same ground before medical desperation claimed it, suggesting rooms that taught children one decade and fevers the next. The building still belongs to Edinburgh, but its chambers no longer answer knocks.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Edinburgh, Colinton Road, Merchiston Castle School, Sanatorium as Sanatorium (20th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Merchiston Castle, now part of the Merchiston Castle School site in Edinburgh, was originally built in the early 17th century by the Drummond family, Scottish nobles and landowners. The site later became a sanatorium in the 20th century and is remembered for its historical significance as both a noble residence and a medical facility during the tuberculosis era.
