Edinburgh Castle, Old West Sally Port is a gateway on the castle rock, built for entry and exit under pressure. It is not a display chamber or a decorative feature. It is the place where the castle controlled its own border.

Edinburgh Castle, including the Old West Sally Port, was originally built by the Kingdom of Scotland, with significant fortification occurring from the 12th century onwards. It is important as a historic military stronghold and symbol of Scottish heritage, having played a central role in numerous conflicts and royal events.
