What is recorded here

Mackenzie stone stands on the Esplanade, not hidden behind glass or forgotten in a private hall. The monument marks a military life and gives the castle edge a human name. People have passed it for generations, some reading the inscription, others merely feeling the stone under their hands. What is remembered is not only rank or date but the shape of a life made visible in public space.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, Monument to Colonel Mackenzie as Commemorative Monument (19th Century) (1875). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
