Barnbougle Castle kept a seventeenth-century sundial, measuring daylight before modern clocks crowded the sky. The castle has vanished, but the dial still tilts toward the sun somewhere beneath Edinburgh soil. Shadow and light obeyed it then, and perhaps they still do beneath the grass.
