Edgar Purnell Hooley was a highway engineer and inventor who significantly advanced road construction techniques by developing and patenting the Tarmac process, creating the world's first modern tarmac road on Radcliffe Road. His innovation greatly improved road durability and paved the way for modern asphalt surfaces.
