Eastnor Castle is a deliberate fake, built 1811 to 1820 for John Cocks, 1st Earl Somers, with Robert Smirke designing a medieval silhouette that never guarded a border. The deception continues inside: narrow windows strangle the light, Pugin decorated the drawing room in 1849, and a family still lives in a kitchen enlarged in 1992 while most rooms stand empty. The castle does not pretend to be ancient; it admits it is a performance, which makes its grandeur more interesting rather than less credible.
