Kilnamanagh castle sat behind a wide, deep fosse and a drawbridge, turning an ordinary Irish field into a place where entry required permission. The earthwork did not merely mark a boundary; it shaped the approach, forced a narrow path, and gave the castle a defensive identity. Whether the fosse held water, shadow, or fear is no longer certain, but its size and depth made the warning clear.

The OS Letters describe a 'wide and deep fosse' which enclosed Kilnamanagh castle and a drawbridge (ed. O'Flanagan ed. 1927, 34(63)). Compiled by Geraldine Stout
