Earthwork in Gormanstown (phillips)

Earthwork

What is recorded here

Thirty-two metres of buried rope tighten the pasture northwest of Gormanstown Castle, visible only when grass grows uneven or rain draws its line. The castle keeps human memory; the earthwork holds the older shape that made the castle possible. A circle is not a mistake. It is a marker, a boundary, a chamber, a gathering place, or a warning about what should not be forgotten.
In reclaimed pasture 115m NW of the ruins of Gormanstown Castle (LI040-066003-). Enclosure (LI040-066001-) lies to immediate SW. Not depicted on OSi historic maps. Identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 110; AP 5/2118) as a possible enclosure. Outline of monument visible as a roughly circular-shaped cropmark (diam. c. 32m) on OSi orthophoto taken between 2005-12 where it is intersected at SW by field drain running NW-SE. Partial outline of possible earthwork visible on Digital Globe orthophoto taken 2011-13. Faint cropmark visible on Google Earth orthoimage dated 14/09/2019 with drainage ditches located to NW and SE. See attached Bruff aerial photograph (110) and Google Earth orthoimages. Compiled by: Martin Fitzpatrick Date of upload: 25 May 2021
