Earthwork in Carrowcastle (gallen By., Kilgarvan Par.)

In pasture, located on top of a hill, with a steep fall of ground at S, W and N. There are very good views, especially to W, over the surrounding sharply undulating terrain. This monument is not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, where the location is marked with a trigonometrical point; it is shown on the 1922 edition as a small hachured circular feature (diam. c. 10m). When inspected in 1996, it was engulfed in an impenetrable thicket of blackthorn, brambles, hawthorn and hazel, and it was not possible to fully examine it. In parts at E and NE a slightly raised area defined by a scarp (H 1m at E) could be glimpsed, with remnants of a field wall on a roughly N-S axis immediately outside it.
