Earthwork defences of Countisbury Castle promontory fort

Countisbury Castle stands on a narrow coastal promontory in North Devon, where steep natural cliffs replace much of the work that human hands must do. The surviving earthworks mark the added defences of an ancient promontory fort, shaping a place where the sea itself participates in the fortress.
