Otway Cuffe, mayor of Kilkenny 1907-1908 and grandson of the Earl of Desart, directed the building of the new St. John's bridge. The completed work incorporated a stone taken from the old structure, preserving part of what had already stood there. The bridge became a visible continuation rather than a clean break, carrying both memory and function across the same place.
This stone was taken from the old and placed on the new St. John's bridge designed in the mayorality of the Hon Otway Cuffe Mayor of Kilkenny 1907-1908 grandson of the above named Earl of Desart.
