Durisdeer Castle stands on one of two natural mounds in Oldtown Wood near Carronbridge, though no ground evidence confirms whether either mound is a true motte. The Menzies held it until English forces took it during the Wars of Scottish Independence, then Bruce captured it soon after the Comyn murder before it returned to English hands on May 1, 1306. Sir William Douglas, father of Sir James, attacked and captured it in 1296, making the site a repeated prize rather than a steady home.

Durisdeer Castle was built in the 16th century by the Keith family, a prominent Scottish noble family. It is remembered as a historic seat of the Earls Marischal and for its strategic location in Aberdeenshire.
