Dunster Castle stands on a steep hill called the Tor, where the Luttrell family lived from the late 1300s until the 1970s. Parliament destroyed much of the medieval defence at the end of the First English Civil War, but the house inside the old ward still faces the sea and the village. Anthony Salvin reshaped the remains in the 1860s and 1870s to suit Victorian taste, adding gothic lines and picturesque details. The castle is now a National Trust attraction, still marked by loss, occupation and change.
