Dunphail Castle stood before 1314 on a steep hill in Moray, but Earl of Moray besieged it in 1330 and erosion has since swallowed its south and west walls. The surviving northeast tower rises beside vaulted rubble rooms, while a faint bank still marks the lost forecourt. It is not a polished ruin but a place where the hill itself chewed through stone, leaving only the parts strong enough to resist forgetting.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Dunphail Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Dunphail Castle was built by the Macdonalds of Islay in the 13th century and later held by Clan Donald. It is remembered as a strategically important stronghold in the Western Isles during the medieval period.
