Wallace's Loaning still drops beside Glencaple Road, a thin dark line under the bridge where Castledykes Cottage stands. The name suggests a bridge born of dry stone or old anger, not water, yet locality gives it life: a road crossed, a loaning shadowed, a cottage watching. Dumfries keeps such small works ordinary, but the contrast between Drybridge and loaning makes the place remember itself.
