Castle Road still smells of brine and machine oil. William Denny and Brothers Ltd built the roll on roll off jetty in the twentieth century, forcing heavy vehicles to mount water without cranes or men wasting breath on ropes. Dumbarton gave up smooth certainty to make port entry instant, and that brutal clarity changed every shipment leaving Scotland.
