Donaghmore Church

In the S sector of a graveyard (KD006-005004-) on an early monastic site (KD006-005001-). The poorly preserved, ivy-clad remains of a rectangular structure built of uncoursed limestone blocks (wall T 0.9m). An account by Lord Walter Fitzgerald (1903-5, 26-28) contains a ground plan showing a nave (dims. L c. 9.9m ESE-WNW; Wth c. 5.1m) and chancel (dims. L c. 4.9m ESE-WNW; Wth c. 3.7m) with breaks in the N and S walls of the nave, and the information that the ruins were repointed in 1892 by order of the Duke of Leinster. A segmented, pointed rubble arch (Wth 2.4m; H 2.7m) of thin flagstones in the E wall of the nave gave access to the chancel which has been levelled since, and the area is now occupied by a large grave plot. The W gable of the nave is surmounted by a small bellcote and has a narrow loft light with a square head and internal splay. The interior contains numerous headstones.
