Domen Gastell is a large twelfth-century motte and bailey castle beside the main road in Welshpool, destroyed in 1274. The Welsh lords of Powys likely occupied this original castle of Pool before building Powis Castle, using it as the anchor for the new borough. The motte still rises overgrown near the street while the bailey survives as a private bowls green, keeping the castle half-hidden inside the living town.
