Domen Gastell rose as a large twelfth-century motte and bailey within Welshpool, likely the original seat of the Welsh lords of Powys before Powis Castle existed. They probably founded the borough of Pool around this stronghold, making the earthworks the birthplace of the town itself. The castle fell in 1274, but the motte still stands beside the main road while the bailey survives as a bowls green, embedding medieval power into ordinary local life.
