Here lieth interred DOLLY PENTREATH who died in 1777. Said to have been the last person who conversed in the ancient Cornish the peculiar language of this county from the earliest records till it expired in the eighteenth century in this parish of S. Paul

Dolly Pentreath is believed to have been the last native speaker of the Cornish language, which had been spoken in Cornwall for centuries before falling out of use. Her burial place marks an important moment in the history of linguistic and cultural heritage in Cornwall.
