Dodleston Castle began as a prehistoric ring where people gathered long before stone walls existed, then became an early medieval assembly place and possibly a sacred enclosure before the Normans rebuilt it as a border stronghold. The circular earthworks still mark that older rhythm of meeting, judgement and belief, while St Mary’s Church stands beside them like a later hand pressing the same spot. Even when castle builders overwrote the place, they did not invent its importance; they joined a line of humans who kept returning because the land already felt like a centre.
