Diamond was a nineteenth-century sloop operating near Brodick Castle on Arran in the Firth of Clyde. The Firth of Clyde is a busy shipping lane, so the risk of collision or grounding was constant. The name suggests the vessel belonged to the Brodick estate or served its local trade.
