Greengate Lodge still stands beside Delgatie Castle in Aberdeenshire, a small gate lodge whose exact age has never been recorded. It may have marked the entrance to a grand estate, controlled who approached the main house and forced visitors to announce themselves before entering. The missing date does not weaken the place; it preserves the sudden appearance of a boundary, a doorway invented around a castle already old enough to be taken for permanent.
