Deborah Alcock was born in 1835 in Kilkenny, Ireland, the daughter of the Venerable John Alcock and Jane. She grew up reading forbidden novels and saintly narratives before becoming a late-Victorian author of religious historical fiction. She never married, lived with her father until his death, and wrote his memoir. She died in January 1913 at Hastings, leaving behind books such as The Spanish Brothers and a small fortune.
