Corfe Castle

“Stone walls, shaky history.”

Corfe Castle sits right there, mocking you from the top of a hill in Dorset. It’s a proper fortification, built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. Back then, most castles were dirt and wood, but this bad boy used stone, which made it look the part immediately. The 12th and 13th centuries brought some major upgrades, turning it into a real power player. Then Elizabeth I sold the place to Sir Christopher Hatton in 1572, because the Crown needed cash. Sir John Bankes bought it in 1635, and his wife, Lady Mary, became the legend. She held the fort against Parliamentarian forces in 1643 and 1645. Story goes she was the true hero while her husband was off fighting elsewhere. Eventually, the Parliamentarians slighted it in 1645, smashing walls to stop it being used again. Now the National Trust owns it. You get to walk the ruins, see the views, and imagine the drama. It’s not just a pile of rocks, it’s history with a chip on its shoulder. Come up, bring boots, and mind the gaps.

Then Tom went looking for the oddest places around it.

Stop 2 · Hop back in the car, 10 minutes

Hamworthy Park

“Squirrel has seen things.”

Hamworthy Park in Bournemouth is sprawling and full of potential. I saw a squirrel there that looked like it had seen things, so keep an eye on your snacks.

Sea Music sculpture on Poole Quay

“Fish hear the tune.”

Sea Music sculpture on Poole Quay is humming a tune only fish can hear. I bet if you listen closely, it tells you the tide times, or maybe just plays 'Wombles' on repeat.

North Haven Point

Stop 5 · Hop back in the car, 5 minutes

North Haven Point

“Friendly tail sculptures, maybe.”

North Haven Point has tail sculptures watching the harbour, which is weirdly cool. The point itself is just jutting out bravely. Check those tails out and tell me if they're friendly.
