David Rhind brass plaque

This brass commemorative plaque records: This building was designed by David Rhind (1808-1883) as the local headquarters of the Central Bank and constructed between 1846 and 1847. Rhind trained under the renowned architect Augustus Pugin in London and was responsible for many of the bank's premises, Invariably they took the form of Italian Renaissance pallazzi. The bold cornice at the top of the building, returning down both sides, is a Rhind trademark. The magnificent coffered plaster ceiling of the banking hall and ther cantilevered stone staircase still remain. The building ceased to be a bank in 2003.

David Rhind (1808-1883) was a prominent architect who trained under Augustus Pugin and designed numerous bank buildings in the Italian Renaissance style; his trademark bold cornice is featured on many of his works.
