This blue commemorative plaque records: David Oluwale A British citizen, he came to Leeds from Nigeria in 1949 in search of a better life. Hounded to his death near Leeds Bridge, two policemen were imprisoned for their crimes. David Oluwale was a Nigerian immigrant who faced severe racial persecution and ultimately died under suspicious circumstances in the River Aire in Leeds; his tragic case highlighted issues of racism and police misconduct in 1960s Britain.
