Dairsie Castle rose above a Fife river as a bishopric stronghold before becoming the turbulent seat of the Learmonth family. It hosted a confused royal parliament in 1335, sheltered an ambushed nobleman in 1575, and gave Patrick Learmonth a base for rabbit farming on the Isle of May and martial action at Cupar Moor. The castle mixed church origin, local power, border-like violence and domestic ambition, while its ruined form still suggests a household that treated prophecy, war and property as one continuous game.
