This black commemorative plaque records: Nos 58/62 High Street The building was erected in 1884 and is in the Italianate Style with a bracketed cornice between wall and roof, and mouldings known as architraves around the windows. It was a high quality merchant's property erected for D & J MacEwen, who made their first profits supplying foodstuffs to the railway construction workers.
D & J MacEwen were merchants who made their initial fortune by supplying foodstuffs to railway construction workers, subsequently commissioning a high-quality property in Italianate style as a testament to their success.
