Victorian writers invented the Cymbeline story to make the Norman fort sound like a Celtic last stand, but the earthworks still mark a real military anchor on Beacon Hill. The hilltop barrow, beacon fire and later gun emplacement show that the place has repeatedly served warnings and watchfulness. Walking the ridge beside the golf course and Chequers views, a person can still feel the sudden exposure that made the site useful.
