Cursing stone in Kilmoon West

Cursing stone

What is recorded here

Kilmoon West lost its cursing stones between Westropp’s visit and 1998. They stood beside a holy well near the graveyard, marked for vengeance or warning, then vanished without trace. Perhaps neighbours took them home, embedding local anger into private kitchens. More likely the field simply swallowed them, removing the proof that people once believed stone could return harm unchanged.
This record is for the original location of a number of cursing stones noted by Westropp (1900-02, 132) at a holy well (CL008-049003-) c. 120m SW of Kilmoon graveyard (CL008-049002-). On inspection in 1998 no such stones were present. The number of stones and their present location is unknown. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 30 November 2016
