Cupmarked stone in Milleennagun

Cupmarked stone

What is recorded here

Milleennagun in County Cork held a cupmarked stone with eight distinct depressions before fence work displaced it and erased its exact position. The disappearance transforms a static artifact into a living warning: human hands can dismantle ancient markers in minutes, depriving later people of the chance to read what the cups recorded.
Discovered during removal of part of field fence. Stone with eight cupmarks (pers. comm. Tony Miller). Removed from original position and could not be located. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 23 August 2023 Attached image (CO121-086----_01.JPG) courtesy of Tony Miller
