Culverhay Castle stands east of the Englishcombe church as a ringwork ditch and bank, marking a place where stone buildings appeared during the first half of the 13th century. It may have faced a medieval deer park, giving the village a dangerous, spacious life in which people hunted, worked or watched the road. The earthworks still hold that shape, preserving a small castle world that no longer needs explanation because it is still there to be seen.
